About Alcon
Alcon Entertainment was founded in 1997, making it one of the oldest independent film studios in the world. The company develops, finances, and produces theatrical feature films, television series, interactive gaming content, publishing and music for worldwide audiences.
Alcon’s origins can be traced back to an extensive business plan that co-founders Broderick Johnson and Andrew Kosove wrote for FedEx Chairman and Founder Frederick W. Smith. Kosove and Johnson envisioned a truly independent film company that would finance films without production capital from the major studios but would release its films via an ongoing studio distribution arrangement. Kosove and Johnson believed that such a structure would allow Alcon to become both a streamlined, non-bureaucratic hub for filmmakers looking for an artistic friendly environment, and a profitable business enterprise that was able to maximize the commercial potential and revenues on each of its films. In other words, by combining the best attributes of the independent film world with the power of major studio distribution, Johnson and Kosove believed they could create a company uniquely positioned for success. Mr. Smith liked their business plan and agreed to back their venture.
Today, close to thirty years after its founding, Alcon has become among the most enduring and well-respected entertainment companies in the world. It owns a library of dozens of globally released feature films that have generated more than 3.5 billion dollars in revenues. Furthermore, as Alcon has evolved and grown, it has expanded into other businesses such as television where it produced and financed the hit show, THE EXPANSE, as well as the award winning documentaries, SINATRA and THE DEFIANT ONES, in addition to interactive gaming where the company has established partnerships with leading game developers such as Annapurna Interactive and Telltale Games. In 2014, Alcon formed a joint venture called Alcon Sleeping Giant to expand into the music space and thus gain greater financial benefit and control over the music in its film and TV content. Alcon Sleeping Giant now owns over 12,000 tracks in its music catalogue and has won multiple awards for its work.
Alcon takes pride in its ability to work successfully across many genres, having produced and financed family classics like MY DOG SKIP, THE BLIND SIDE, and the recent animated hit THE GARFIELD MOVIE, tense thrillers such as INSOMNIA and PRISONERS, which helped launch the respective careers of Christoper Nolan and Denis Villeneuve, acclaimed dramas such as P.S. I LOVE YOU and THE SISTERHOOD OF THE TRAVELING PANTS, to the acclaimed sci-fi epic BLADE RUNNER 2049.
As Alcon nears its third decade in operation, the company’s extensive ownership of IP, fulsome development slate, and diversified expertise over multiple platforms, have it positioned for growth in the years to come.
Alcon’s subdivisions include: Alcon Television Group whose projects include the hit sci-fi series The Expanse, a critically acclaimed space thriller which boasts a 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes; and the animated children’s series Pete the Cat, a co-production with Amazon Studios based on the best-selling children’s book series.
Alcon Television Group’s other past projects include the Grammy-winning and Emmy-nominated four-part documentary The Defiant Ones, originally developed for HBO, which chronicled the divergent roots and unlikely partnership of Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine and the Emmy-nominated HBO documentary Sinatra: All Or Nothing At All from Oscar-winning director Alex Gibney which remains one of HBO’s most successful shows in the 50+ demographic.
